Cordelia Cordelia Reads Herself King Lear. 20”x16”x10”, Sculpture made with low-fire clay and commercial glazes. Oxide and underglaze, gold lustre, mylar, leather, india ink. This sculpture won a Craft Ontario Affiliate Award at the Ottawa Guild of Potters Exhibition this spring 2014. Using the same motifs and clay body as in the Relics Series, this sculpture describes the character of Cordelia as a marionette in her own play. The text of Act I Scene I was hand-written in ink on a mylar sheet and then cut into individual strips and attached to Cordelia’s clay script. Sphinx Sphinx. 17”x12’x11”, Sculpture made with paper clay. Oxides, underglaze, lustre, electric fired cone 6. Post firing additions of silver metal on paws and scorpion tail and poly-filla applied to body and then treated with a heat gun to create blisters and points, so as to render it painful to touch. The Sphinx is a magical creature and a powerful female figure, albeit unpleasant. This mythological creature travels from village to village demanding answers to the riddles she poses and if a citizen is unable to correctly answer, he or she is eaten (please note the human being devoured inside the open mouth of the Sphinx). Green and Blue Bowls The tension between theory and practice has always been a heated conversation and certainly, in my critical theory classes at university, the debate over the practice vs. thought leaves everyone charged with disagreeable energy that requires constant negotiation. Since I am a blundering thinker, I reconcile the two practices by both making theoretical ceramics and useful ceramics. I am aware that I am not answering the question at all and only fuelling it by being so obvious and binary. As a result, I proceed slowly forward, right foot, left foot, toward some better understanding about the purpose of my art. The G&B Bowl Series carry strictly functional pieces with many glaze layers designed to make a beautiful, useful object that many people can enjoy in their daily lives. Relics

Relics The work I have produced for the Relics Series is the outcome of an on-going dialogue between literature, art and history in an attempt to make objects that showcase a love of things past which still have a relevant and contemporary feel. The narrative aspect of clay is what motivates my work as I attempt to formulate moments of beauty or drama for use in our everyday lives. For the functional works in this series, I use paired down methods of construction – the pinch pot, the coil, a slab – to relate to an early time and then apply stamps, both commercial and handmade, to form prints of bark, spider-webs, vines, insects, and various fissures and crevices which are created to hold stains and oxides for a weathered look.
