Relics

The work I have produced for the Relics Series is the outcome of an on-going dialogue between literature, art and history in an attempt to make objects that showcase a love of things past which still have a relevant and contemporary feel. The narrative aspect of clay is what motivates my work as I attempt to formulate moments of beauty or drama for use in our everyday lives. For the functional works in this series, I use paired down methods of construction – the pinch pot, the coil, a slab – to relate to an early time and then apply stamps, both commercial and handmade, to form prints of bark, spider-webs, vines, insects, and various fissures and crevices which are created to hold stains and oxides for a weathered look. The addition of undecipherable script and gold lustre put a human imprint on the works and add a touch of fantasy to the history narrative.
